Knights in the Myth — Session #6
The party emerged from the initial skirmish battered but victorious, having fended off the Avian Bird-People and retreated into the safety of The Orrery. The retainers proved their worth in combat, earning clearer instructions for future engagements. Kelwun the Colossus demonstrated overwhelming power against the bird-people and then checked on the party, establishing a moment of connection. The ancient Empire markings in the cavern flickered with light, hinting at secrets within the mesa. The party now stands at the threshold of the unknown, with the colossus's safety secured for the moment, but questions remain about the bird-people's attack and what lies deeper in the mesa.
Sir Bleedsalot executed a spectacular super gambit with his banner pike, thrusting it through an avian, lifting it off the ground, and smashing it headfirst onto the floor before kicking its face to dislodge the pike. The flourish was straight out of a fighting game, leaving the table in awe.
Shellraiser, set in an unbreakable formation on his stout horse, received the charge of three diving Avian Bird-People and unleashed a devastating smite that knocked two out of the sky and wounded the third. His brutal confidence was palpable as he declared his intent to stand on their necks.
Ugum's Ugum's Elephant Bone Cannon—a hollowed elephant bone loaded with water balloons—proved its worth when he fired it at a diving avian, knocking it out of the sky. The absurd weapon, with Italian instructions translated to 'sausage balloon water,' became a crowd favorite.
The retainers proved their mettle in combat: Ruin landed the killing blow on an avian with a tooth club, Fennec savaged an avian's foot in a bite-grab gambit, and Jada joined with a whittling dagger. After the fight, the retainers high-fived each other, celebrating their first real victory.
Jada, a 12-year-old retainer, tugged on Ugum's sleeve after the fight and asked for a full-size knife, complaining she didn't get anything for her birthday. The moment was both endearing and darkly humorous, highlighting the retainers' growing role in the party.
Kelwun the Colossus transitioned into red mode and engaged the Avian Bird-People outside, smashing one to the ground like 'hummingbirds assaulting a lion.' After scraping the remains off its foot, it peered into the cavern and asked if everyone was okay, establishing a moment of connection with the party.
The party arrived at The Orrery, a mesa of ancient Empire origin with a tree suspended above it by beams of light. Before they could take in the sight, Avian Bird-People in multicolored robes dove toward them, wielding hooked tridents. A dust cloud approached from behind, adding pressure. The party decided to flee into a large corroded opening in the mesa wall rather than fight. Sir Bleedsalot heroically doubled back on horseback to grab a retainer dumped by the mule, pulling him up behind the saddle. Inside the chamber, they found a vast space with Empire markings still flickering with light, and large formations covered in dust and algae.
As they retreated, five Avian Bird-People attacked. Three dove at Marsh and Shellraiser near the hole, while two swept toward the rear where Sir Bleedsalot and Ugum were with the retainers. Shellraiser, set in an unbreakable formation on his stout horse, received the charge of three avians and unleashed a smite that knocked two out of the sky and wounded the third. Ugum fired his Ugum's Elephant Bone Cannon—loaded with water balloons—at one of the rear avians, knocking it out of the sky. Sir Bleedsalot fell back to interpose himself between the last diving avian and the retainers, taking the attack upon himself. The party then retreated into the mesa cavern, with Kelwun the Colossus transitioning into red mode and engaging the remaining bird-people outside, smashing one to the ground like "hummingbirds assaulting a lion."
Inside the cavern, three avians pursued and attacked individually. The party counterattacked with coordinated teamwork. Sir Bleedsalot executed a spectacular super gambit with his banner pike, thrusting it through an avian, lifting it off the ground, and smashing it headfirst onto the floor. The retainers proved effective: Ruin landed the killing blow on one avian with a tooth club, Fennec grabbed an avian's foot and savaged it, and Jada joined with a whittling dagger. After the fight, Jada tugged on Ugum's sleeve and asked for a full-size knife, complaining she didn't get anything for her birthday. The party decided to instruct their retainers to always attack the nearest target without waiting for orders. The session ended with Kelwun the Colossus bending down, blue eyes staring in, asking, "What just happened? Are you okay?"
