The session ended with the party regrouping near the wall, the gate about to open in three rounds. The Winged Commander was debuffed by fear and entangled, but still a deadly threat. Humperdink had used his teleportation scroll, and the defenders on the wall were taking casualties from the catapults. The party now knew that blue light repelled the mushroom zombies, and that the commander was a personal enemy of Vash. The siege was far from over, and the party had to hold their ground until the gate opened.

✧ ✦ ✧

The party emerged from the Door of Despair to find their home, the town of Uber Farm, under a full-scale siege. An army of zombified mushroom creatures swarmed the fields, catapults lobbed spore-laden bodies at the walls, and a massive battering ram—the Maw Crawler—pulsed with purple bioluminescence as it advanced. Humperdink shouted "Run!" and bolted toward the gate, the party following in a desperate dash. Gren Hammerstone took three arrows in the first volley but kept pace, while Khord tripped and fell prone, then cast a radiant cantrip at the ram, making its glow flicker. Dicer tripped twice in a row, blaming his "foot getting clipped by an arrow" each time, but still granted Gren a Bardic Inspiration. Vash activated his Astral Form, helped Dicer up, and took a Sharpshooter shot at a Mysterious Winged Figure watching from a rock. The figure casually absorbed the fear energy in its gauntlet and locked eyes with Vash—a clear challenge.

As the siege intensified, the Winged Commander took flight and struck Humperdink with an arcane blast, knocking him prone. Gren Hammerstone inhaled spores from his Pain Blinder Axe for resistance, then deployed a Tangle Vine Trap on the path to slow the ram. Dicer charged through a wooden barricade, smashing it down with his Charger ability, while Khord used thaumaturgy to boom a false warning: "Everyone run! The dragon is right behind us!" The mushroom zombies panicked. Vash landed a devastating shot on the commander (44 damage), but the commander dodged the second and began pulling Vash toward him with telekinesis. Gren Hammerstone fired a Fear Arrows at the commander, making him perceive Gren as a divine angelic being. Dicer turned back from the gate, rolled his eyes at Vash's predicament, and cast a spell to entangle the commander with vines. Khord killed a zombie with sacred flame, but its death released a fungal spore cloud that Dicer barely resisted.

The commander, no longer feared, teleported next to Vash and slammed him with his barbed sword, dealing heavy necrotic damage. He then absorbed life force from a nearby husk to heal. Catapults launched spore-laden bodies at the wall, killing several guards and wounding Humperdink. Gren Hammerstone and Khord both cast light on their weapons, discovering that the blue light visibly repelled the mushroom zombies. Dicer granted Vash bardic inspiration and killed an entangled zombie with his musket. Humperdink, wounded and desperate, used a Scroll of Teleportation to pull Vash out of the trap and closer to the wall. Vash simply said "Wee" as he was teleported. The gate would open in three rounds, and the party regrouped near the wall, knowing they had to hold their ground against the commander and the siege until then.

Key Beats

01

Vash took a risky shot at the Mysterious Winged Figure, who casually absorbed the fear energy and locked eyes with him—a moment that escalated the threat from a distant observer to a personal nemesis.

02

Khord used thaumaturgy to shout a false dragon warning, causing chaos among the mushroom zombies—a clever deception that bought the party precious time.

03

Gren Hammerstone fired a Fear Arrows at the Winged Commander, making him perceive Gren as a divine angelic being—a deeply thematic hit that turned the tide of the confrontation.

04

Dicer turned back from the gate to entangle the Winged Commander, prioritizing Vash's safety over his own—a selfless act that defined his character.

05

Humperdink used a Scroll of Teleportation to rescue Vash from the tangle vine trap, a brave and costly act that consumed the scroll and left him more exposed.

06

The discovery that blue light from the light spell repelled the mushroom zombies gave the party a tactical advantage and hinted at a weakness to radiant energy.
