The first day of planning ended with the party having a firm destination—the Shadowfell—and a cover story. But beneath the layers of fabricated titles and borrowed lanterns, the deeper truth crystallized: Vash's binding to the Brine Mother is not merely a curse but a mark of her Atonement acolytes, a role that carries unknown obligations. The party now knows the Convergence was the work of a single celestial elf, and that the obelisks—including Shadowfell's own—may be both the shield and the lock they need to breach. Their path is set; they will walk into despair armed with cold flame, nervous bravado, and a vampire's dubious patronage.

The morning had barely warmed the cobblestones when Dicer slipped away from the group and into the cool shadows of Humperdink's Laboratory. There, standing before the vampire with barely concealed anger, he demanded to know what had been done to Olivia’s Amulet. Humperdink, lounging amid his vials and scrolls, confessed that goblin-tinkers had modified it—turning the trinket into a vacuum that could harvest frail essence from freshly dead creatures without Dicer's knowledge or consent. 'This was an experiment,' he said, raising his hands in mock surrender. Dicer refused to turn his back as he left, the distrust between them sharp enough to cut. 'You do not trust that vampire,' he warned Khord later, his voice flat. Humperdink could only mutter, 'Maybe I need to suck for dogs. I don't think he likes us very much.'

At the Peepers' Library, the party dove into research on the mysterious Valerith Umbrozan. Gren Hammerstone—showed a hidden talent for ancient languages, reading scrolls with a strange, humming voice even he couldn't place. 'I'm not even sure what language this is in,' he admitted, 'but I'm able to read shit.' From the dust of forgotten tomes, a figure emerged: a celestial elf who had studied stars, a name that meant 'he who sees beyond the veil,' a surname that whispered 'in shadow.' He was the chief architect of the Convergence—a shield of five obelisks tethering reality across as many planes, including the Shadowfell. Meanwhile, Peepers identified the belt Vash had been wearing all along: the Belt of Atonement, worn by acolytes of the Brine Mother. The pieces clicked into place. Vash leaned back in his chair, scratching Olivia’s ears with a grin, calling her 'my little essence goblin.'

Then came the revelation of what lay ahead. Humperdink spoke of the Shadowfell—his home—with the grim affection of someone describing a slow illness. The small town of Uberfart was ruled by his mother, a vampire lieutenant to the Raven Queen who valued blood gifts, oaths, and titles above all else. To mention his father would be the gravest of insults. The party would need to claim they were 'Lords of Aromachi' if they wanted her favor. 'They make everybody sad,' Humperdink said of Shadowfell. 'Nobody likes Shadowfell.' In exchange for their cover story and a message about his 'conquests,' he gave them a strange gift: the Cold Flame Lantern, a pitch-black vessel that drank light from the room. When Khord struck the lantern with force, cold blue fire would ignite a lump of Blue Amber, warding off the small creatures that infested the plane. Khord accepted it without a word, hanging it from the mushrooms on his shoulders.

Heliana pulled the party aside with a warning: Queen Margarita had sent a request for Humperdink to return home—not only a long-overdue family reunion, but a mission. A mysterious rot was eating away at the Queen's protective rooms, and she needed trustworthy hands. The party could investigate the obelisk under this cover. But Heliana was blunt when Dicer suggested bringing the hapless Fearsome Four along as meat shields. 'I wouldn't,' she said flatly. 'Somebody will die if you guys bring them because they're dumb enough to get you killed.' The decision was made. The party would travel light, armed with lies, a cold flame, and the sinking certainty that in the Shadowfell, despair was only the first thing they would have to survive.
